McCutchen is signed for about an average of 8.5 Million Dollars a year until he hits FA in 2018. If he can be amongst the running for NL MVP every year like 2012, this will bode well for the Pirates value in his salary. He is the best player the franchise has drafted since Barry Bonds.

Neil Huntington has done a great job assembling this Pirates team – and has spun some great trades in order to see his club actually be competitive over the last few years.

At the MLB Reports, we intend to show you the Roster Tree for the Bucs – and how they assembled their current rosters.  It will work in a six degrees of separation like format.

Once we figure out the origin of how many trades going back in time it takes to see w here the tree started, it will be time to dissect how the team fared on the deals.

If a player has never left the organization at all, the tree will be easy – as it will just be the year they were drafted.

Listed Below is Part 1 of the Roster Tree

The Pittsburgh Pirates organization is looking a lot better over the last few years. They have had 20 Losing seasons in a row - and are one of the 3 teams to not make the playoffs since the 1994 Player Strike (KC and Toronto) and are the the only National League team to hold this distinction. The club were one of the best franchises around the game of the MLB in the 1970's. Their recent struggles have been because of drafting prior to the Huntington reign as GM.

Brandon Inge UT (36) -  Signed as a Free Agent Prior to 2013.  Season Stats and Career #’s with the Pirates:  .198/.225/.446 with O HRs and 4 RBI.  To say that Inge has had a brutal beginning with the Bucs would be right. Inge is only signed through 2013.

Jose Tabata OF (24) See the Pirates Pitchers Roster Tree for the breakdown.

Michael McKenry C (28)  Was acquired from the Boston Red Sox in 2011 for a player to be named later or Cash.  It must have been cash – as there is currently no name in the trade going back to Boston as of now.  2013 Season Stats: .208/.269/.658 (3 HRs and 10 RBI in 72 AB).  Pirates Career:  .222/.294/.678 – with 17 HRs and 60 RBI in 500 AB spanning 3 years.  McKenry is a perfect back up Catcher that possesses a little bit of pop.  He is singed through the 2017 season.  He hit 12 HR in 240 AB during the 2012 year.

Alex Presley OF (27) – Selected in the 8th Round of the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft.  2013 Season Stats:  .226/.226/.581 (1 HR and 1 RBI in 31 AB).  Pittsburgh Career:  .259/.298/.718.  Presley is having a hard time finding a spot in the OF with the emergence of Marte.

Josh Harrison UT (25) – Was Traded by the Cubs, along with Jose Ascaino and Kevin Hart for Tom Gorzelanny (Drafted in the 2nd Round of the 2003 MLB Amateur Draft by the Pirates  – and John Grabow (Drafted in the 3rd Round of the 1997 MLB Amateur Draft by the Pirates).  2013 Season Stats (2 – 11).  He was optioned back to Indianapolis on May.31/2013.

Jose Ascanio only played in 8 games (7.11 ERA) for the Pirates – before being DFA’d.  He is out of baseball.

Kevin Hart went 1 – 8 with a 6.92 ERA in 10 Game Starts for the Bucs before being optioned.  He was released later. He had signed with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (Independent League) and played in the 2012 year.  He has no signed with a team for 2013 yet.

Tom Gorzelanny went 11 – 11 in his Cubs career with a 4.43 ERA in 174.2 IP.  He was granted traded to Washington after.  He is one of the better relievers in the NL this year with a 1.91 ERA in 27 Appearances.  However, for this piece, we look at the teams numbers who he was traded too.

John Grabow was 4 – 4 with the Cubs, sported a 5.03 ERA in 116 Games.

This trade is a non – factor right now.  If Josh Harrison turns out to be a serviceable player in the Majors for a few years, than the Pirates will win the deal.

Garrett Jones clubbed his way onto the scene in July of 2009 for the Bucs, where he hit .310/.370/1.061 with 10 HRs and 17 RBI in his 1st 100 AB of his Rookie Year. He would go onto to finish 7th in NL ROY Voting. GI Jones represents the good FA deals that Huntington has doled out

GI Jones represents the good FA deals that Huntington has doled out.  Huntington has also known when to walk away from pending Free Agents.  They have traded away players like Jason Bay, Xavier Nady, Nate McLouth (despite recent success, he was a bust in ATL and PIT last year).  It would be nice if the GM could add a significant offensive player at the Trade Deadline in 2013.
